Question:

When is the next Airshow and Open house at the LR AFB?

Answer:

I would guess next year. They don't hold them annually any more.  Last year (2010) was the first time they held one since 2008 so it may be every two years now. I checked the air base website and it doesn't mention anything about one.  You might want to contact the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce. chamber@jacksonville-arkansas.com

Question:

Will Dogpatch ever re-open? And why is it not being cleaned up by the new owner ?

Answer:

Hi Linda,

The last news I heard about Dogpatch was in May. It was awarded to a rider of an all-terrain vehicle who was injured on the property as a lawsuit settlement. I've not heard of what plans they might have for the park.

Question:

Is there anything of interest near Quitman, Ar.

Answer:

Quitman is about 10 miles southwest of Heber Springs, Greers Ferry Lake and the Little Red River.  Heber Springs has a quaint downtown area. Obviously, right now with it being summer, the lake and river are the big draws.  There are all kinds of water activities, hiking, and camping on the lake.  The river is famous for its trout fishing.

Question:

We want to take Hy. 7 from the bottom to the top this fall when the leaves are turning. What would be the best time to make the trip? September, October, or when?

Answer:

Hi William,

It's very difficult, if not impossible, to predict when the leaves will change colors, especially this early.  However, the general rule of thumb is mid-to-late October for northern Arkansas, late October to early November for southern Arkansas. It's very rare that we have full color in September.  You can find general fall foliage information on this website: http://www.arkansas.com/calendar/fall_foliage_pg1.aspx

Have a great trip!

Question:

We are planning a vacation to Mt. View August 4 - 8. Any suggestions for inexpensive things to do. We are really looking forward to the trip. But like most short on money. Thanks!

Answer:

Hi Eleanor,

There are plenty of things you can do in Mountain View that are free or don't cost much.  There are free Saturday evening musicals on the courthouse square.  Take a lawn chair or blanket and join in.  If you play an instrument, you can jump right in and jam.  There are wonderful shops all around the court square as well.

The Ozark Folk Center State Park is a very nice place to visit and doesn't cost a whole lot.  Rates are found here: http://www.ozarkfolkcenter.com/rates/season-rates/default.aspx

Nearby Blanchard Springs Caverns is a must if you're in the area.  You can find rates for the different tours on this website: http://www.blanchardcavetours.com/

You can fish the White River, and swim at the Blanchard Springs Recreation Area. http://www.watersports-arkansas.com/in-the-water/

Check the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce website for additional information: http://www.ozarkgetaways.com/index.html

Have a great trip!

Question:

Do you know who I can contact for Boy Scouts of America in our area of Bauxite, AR? I want to get my little guy involved in it. Thank you.

Answer:

Hi again Michelle,

I just received this e-mail. I wasn't totally correct in my response.  Perhaps this will help you even more.

Kerry,
I wanted to call your attention to an error in your response to Michelle.  While Bauxite (Saline Co.) does fall under the Ouachita Area Council of the BSA, there are actually four Boy Scout Councils in the State of Arkansas.  The largest is the Quapaw Area Council, which includes Pulaski County and 32 other counties in central and northeastern Arkansas (www.quapawbsa.org).  The other three councils are Caddo Area Council (southwest Arkansas), WestArk Area Council (northwest Arkansas), and the Desoto Area Council (southeast Arkansas).

Thanks,
Roger Williams
Executive Director
Quapaw Quarter Association

Hi Michelle,

All of the boy scout troops in Arkansas fall under the Ouachita Area Council.  They should be able to tell you where troops are in your area.

Question:

Where or what is Toad Suck?

Answer:

Conway’s Toad Suck Park and annual Toad Suck Daze festival are both named after the Legend of Toad Suck, one of Arkansas’s most colorful. According to local folklore, long ago when steamboats plied the Arkansas River and the water wasn’t the correct depth, the captains and their crew docked where the Toad Suck Lock and Dam now spans the river to wait until the water level rose. While waiting, they occupied themselves at the local tavern there, to the displeasure of the locals who lived nearby. The residents described the sailors this way: "They suck on the bottle 'til they swell up like toads." Hence, the name Toad Suck. The tavern is long gone, but the legend lives on at Toad Suck Daze the first weekend in May every year.
