Question:

A couple of friends and I, motorcyclists, will be traveling through the Forrest City area around the 6-7th of October toward Potosi, MO to a rally. If there are any remarkable geological or historical sites that would keep us sort of on track north, we'd like to know. thanks, tom

Answer:

Hey, Tom! The cool thing is that, if you travel north on Ark. 1 from Forrest City, you'll BE on a remarkable geological site! The highway is part of Crowley's Ridge Parkway National Scenic Byway, and it'll take you north to Missouri. While in Forrest City, try and stop by the St. Francis County Museum, which houses some great artifacts related to the history of the county and the area.

There are some great Arkansas State Parks along the way (Village Creek, Lake Poinsett, Crowley's Ridge)! Crowley's Ridge State Park is located on the spot where Benjamin Crowley (namesake of Crowley's Ridge) settled with him family in 1821. After looking at a map, I would make one suggestion...instead of heading north Ark. 135 in Paragould, why don't you think about continuing northeast on U.S. 49? You're still heading northward to Missouri...but you'll also drive through Piggott, home of the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Cultural Center. If at all possible, I encourage you and your buddies to stop at the museum. It's where Ernest Hemingway wrote part of A Farewell to Arms...and it's really worth the extra miles. Nearby in St. Francis, you'll find Chalk Bluff Battlefield Park, a Civil War site that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You could also stop by Pumpkin Hollow, just a few miles northwest, and pick your own pumpkin! Although you might want to do that on the way BACK...a pumpkin might not be easy to carry on a motorcycle! But most importantly, I hope you and your friends enjoy your time in the Arkansas Delta!

Question:

We are looking for a cabin for about 3 months in the winter. Nothing fancy. Just close enough to a city to be able to shop for groceries, maybe a movie, etc. We are coming from Lincoln, NE so don't want to travel TOO far, yet far enough south to enjoy some warm weather.

Answer:

Pearl, I know you would enjoy spending time in Arkansas! Check out this link on Arkansas.com for a listing of rentals throughout The Natural State! Let me know if you have other questions!

Question:

Where's the best place in northeast Arkansas to go take pictures of deer and turkey and even bear?

Answer:

Wow, Chris! How much time do you have? Many of the Arkansas State Parks in northeast Arkansas (Crowley's Ridge, Lake Frierson, Lake Poinsett and Village Creek) are great places to capture some wonderful wildlife photos. Some of the parks also offer wildlife photography tours throughout the year. You can check out their calendars of events at www.ArkansasStateParks.com. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's Wildlife Management Areas, such as Big Lake WMA and Black River WMA, are also known for their wildlife photography opportunities. Private hunting clubs, such as Buck Hollow Ranch in Pocahontas, also offer wildlife tours geared toward photographers. You can also drive along Crowley's Ridge Parkway National Scenic Byway or the Great River Road National Scenic Byway and see wildlife along the way. Thanks for the question...and happy photographing!!

"You can't go back home to your family, back home to your childhood ... back home to a young man's dreams of glory and of fame ... back home to places in the country, back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time — back home to the escapes of Time and Memory." Thomas Wolfe, You Can’t Go Home Again

Last week, I had the opportunity to, in a way, go “home again.” I spoke to the Jonesboro Rotary Club and was invited by a former professor, Mike Doyle, to visit the Arkansas State University Radio/Television Department, a place where I spent the majority of my college career. One thing led to another, and Mike and I ended up in a studio, along with Mark Smith of KASU and Dr. Mary Jackson-Pitts, another former professor of mine and currently the Interim Chair of the Radio/Television Department. And we just started talking about the Arkansas Delta, a subject that I ALWAYS enjoy discussing!

Tomorrow, Friday, July 30, portions of the interview will be aired on the University’s radio station, KASU. If you’d like to hear the interview, you can listen at 91.9 FM at 8:30 a.m. For those not in the Jonesboro area, KASU streams live at www.KASU.org. Tune in and hear four residents of the Arkansas Delta discuss the history and rich culture of the region. I had a great time doing the interview and being “back home!”

Beginning next Friday, Aug. 6, I’ll be discussing upcoming events throughout The Natural State with Mark Smith of KASU every Friday at 8:30 a.m. The weekly interview will run about four to five minutes and I’ll just give an overview of upcoming festivals, events and happenings the following week.

I actually do three other weekly radio shows around the state. Each Wednesday, I tape a segment on KTHS in Berryville. On Fridays, I do a live interview with Loren and Tex on KDQN in DeQueen at 8:05 a.m. Also on Friday, I join Bob Knight on KTLO in Mountain Home at 9:30 a.m. and we discuss upcoming events throughout The Natural State. So if you’re in any of the areas, listen in!
